Verdict

The modern branch of RuneScape: 20+ years of quests and skills, a huge world and a permanent free-to-play tier. More modern and automated than Old School RuneScape.

About RuneScape

RuneScape, the modern RS3, takes the do-anything sandbox that made the series famous and adds two decades of extra skills, quests and quality-of-life polish. Where Old School is deliberately retro, RS3 is the feature-rich version, with action-bar combat and a smoother interface.

Its free tier is a generous introduction before membership opens up the bulk of the game, and the quests in particular are often funny and inventive. The microtransactions are pushier than in Old School, but the sheer amount of content is remarkable.
