9.0/101. Final Fantasy XIV
The gold standard themepark MMORPG — free trial up to level 70.
No other MMORPG gives away this much. Square Enix lets you play the base game and the entire Heavensward expansion for free, all the way to level 70, with no clock ticking. That's two full games' worth of story, dungeons and raids before anyone asks you for money. The class design helps too: a single character can level every job, tank to healer to caster, so you're never stuck with an early choice or forced to grind alts. Combat feels sluggish at first, built around a global cooldown, then clicks into something genuinely satisfying once your rotations come together. The community even has a nickname for newcomers, sprouts, and tends to welcome them rather than roll its eyes. There are catches. The trial blocks the market board, free companies and friend requests, and the newest expansions plus a subscription wait beyond it. You also sit through a fair bit of slow early story before the writing hits the highs people rave about. None of that changes the basic maths, though: the free slice alone outsizes most games you'd pay full price for. If you're here for story, PvE and a crowd that won't rush you, start today.
